Featured Article: Alternative Therapies for Anxiety and Depression

The most common mental health diagnoses are anxiety and depression. Major depression has become one of the leading disabilities worldwide. While there are a wide variety of treatments available for those suffering from anxiety and depression, many are unaware of the options open to them. Given the serious and disabling nature of this disorder, along with its effects on people and their lives, finding this information is critical to the ability to make informed decisions in regards to treatment options.

Traditional medications are often avoided by suffers as the side effects can be as debilitating as the condition being treated. Anxiety and depression often occur at the same time, increasing the difficulty of finding the correct treatment. The more information sufferers have available, the better they will be able to participate in the process of choosing effective traditional or alternative treatment options.

Insomnia and the inability to sleep properly are listed as the leading symptoms experienced by those with anxiety and depression disorders. It is a vicious circle, as lack of quality rest will further add to the problem. While the root cause of sleep disorders is physiological, there are things that can be done to try to alleviate sleeplessness. To begin with, it is important to ensure that the body has a sufficient supply of vitamins E and B complex. Vitamin E supports the ability of the body to sleep and vitamin B complex has a calming effect on the nerves. In addition, stimulating substances should be avoided. This includes the usual culprits, caffeine and sugar, as well as the use of any illegal substances. Exercise has a powerful effect in the ability to counteract depression by tiring the body and countering sleeplessness.

Finally, there is the use of psychotherapy. Many avoid the use of this tool due to outdated notions of it only being something that "crazy" people use. However, the simple act of being able to talk to someone in a safe, non-judgmental environment has been shown to be highly effective. The ability to let someone else know about the disturbances, stress and feelings being experienced, can have an immediate effect on the tendency toward racing thoughts which is a frequent problem.

Those experiencing anxiety and depression may find it difficult to try or make lifestyle changes. Because alternative therapies are often inexpensive and easily accessed, they are easy to fit into current lifestyles and as such have an increased chance of being used. As effective as alternative therapies can be, it is important to note that results are seldom instantaneous, but occur over time.

Another one of the anxiety and depression alternative therapies is something called the Emotional Freedom Technique and is described as being accupressure for the mind. This type of treatment takes the form of applying gentle pressure to the head, hands and chest. The application of pressure to specified areas is said to relieve emotional stress.

While alternative therapies provide people suffering from anxiety and depression with a choice of treatments, which do not have the added side effects that often accompany medications, they are encouraged to work with their health care provider to find the most effective treatment.
